We know Moving can be stressful, especially when it comes to packing fragile items. People often worry about their glassware, vases, or favourite decorations getting broken during the move. This fear of damage is completely normal, as we all want to make sure our precious items stay safe.
The problem is that packing these fragile items can seem tricky. If you don’t pack them properly, they could easily get scratched or broken. It can be hard to know the right way to protect them, and that’s where many people get stuck.
We have prepared a guide about how to pack fragile items for moving. This guide will make your packing easier and also make sure you won’t stuck in the process.
Choose the Right Packing Materials

To properly pack your fragile items, you need to get the right materials. Every object is different and requires different materials for packing. These materials are like your best friend; they will help you without even asking for it. Below are some common and important materials which I recommend to you:
1- Packing peanuts
2- Packing tape
3- Thick boxes
4- Markers for labelling
5- Wrapping paper
6- Bubble wrap for fragile items
Some Useful Tips For Packing Fragile Items For Moving
So, due to some house issues, I had to move a lot of times, and these are some tips that I personally experienced after breaking some valuable items due to improper packing.
1- Separate Items According to Categories

Start your process by separating the items according to their categories, such as:
- Plates
- Glasses
- Decoration Items
- Electronics
This will help you choose the best packing material for each item. For example, bubble wrap is used to pack glassware and ceramics because they need extra cushioning. I recommend you use two layers of bubble wrap for decoration items that are made of glass.
2- Wrap the Items Completely

It’s better to use wrapping paper for fragile items before bubble wrap. It will act as a base layer and protect your items from scratches. I know it doesn’t feel like an important step, but trust me, some people skipped this and then regretted it. After wrapping the items completely with wrapping paper and bubble wrap, secure them with tape. For crockery, wrap each plate and bowl separately and place them vertically in the box to avoid the pressure which may cause cracks.
3- Use Small Boxes For Ceramics

This tip will save your valuable items. Always pack heavy items in the small and sturdy boxes. This will keep the weight manageable and reduce the chances of movement during transit. Also, pack each item separately with the first layer of wrapping paper and the second layer of bubble wrap, and fill the box completely so it doesn’t move too much. It’s better to be safe than regretting!
4- Don’t use Thin Boxes

Don’t use thin boxes for moving; this money saving may cause you a bigger loss. Always use double-walled and sturdy boxes because they do not fold under pressure and remain in their original shape. However, make sure to add extra tape and a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom for better support.
5- Fill the Empty spaces between boxes

As we say, that doesn’t give an opportunity to people to disturb you, the same goes with these boxes. The boxes of glass and jars have some hollow spaces in them. Make sure to fill these spaces with wrapping paper, towels, or clothes so the items will not move in the box. Our goal is to completely fill the box just like we pack our travel suitcase. This will add stability, keep everything in place during transit, and reduce the risk of fragile items getting crushed or broken.
6- Put Heavy Items on the Bottom of the box

Place the heavy items on the bottom to maintain balance. For example, when grocery shopping, you’d never put a pack of eggs underneath a bag of flour. The same goes for this. So, when packing dishes, place the heaviest plates at the bottom and put smaller or lighter bowls on top, with plenty of wrapping paper between them for protection.
7- Use a Good Amount of Tape

Use high-quality packing tape and apply multiple layers to the bottom and top of the box. For extra protection, you can use the “H-taping method” to seal the middle seam and the edges of the box and secure it. This is only important for packaging fragile items which need extra care.
8- Label Each Box Clearly
Once you’ve packed your fragile items, label each box properly; trust me, it is a game changer. Write “FRAGILE” in bold letters on multiple sides of the boxes and place them in a separate area. Ask the movers to handle these boxes with extra care. Adding a note like “Glass – Handle with Care” provides extra clarity if a box contains specific fragile items, such as glassware or electronics. You can also use coloured markers to write so they will easily stand out.

FAQs
What is the best transport for fragile items?
A moving van with a soft suspension works great. If the item is super fragile or expensive, I recommend you keep it in your own car with extra padding. If the budget allows, air transport is even better for quick delivery.
What is the cheapest packing material for fragile items?
The cheapest packing materials are items you already have at home, like old newspapers, towels, blankets, tissues, and clothes.
Can I use a newspaper instead of packing paper?
Yes, you can, but only for not white items because newspaper ink can rub off and stain your items, like glassware or white ceramics. However, packing paper is a safer and cleaner alternative.
Can I use old boxes for fragile items?
It’s better to use strong and new boxes. Old boxes are weak and might break and will not give the same level of protection.
How to wrap a fragile parcel?
Wrap it well (paper + bubble wrap), secure it with tape, place it in a strong box with cushioning around all sides, and label it clearly to spot it quickly.
